About the museum
The idea for the museum came from Christel and Jochen Kunze, whose collection of old technology formed its foundation. The starting signal came in spring 2000: the former vocational school on the market square, a listed building from 1744 that had stood empty for years, was prepared for the museum and the Kultur- und Museumsverein Kölleda. On 3 October 2000, the tenth anniversary of German Unity, the Funkwerkmuseum opened.
The concept and set-up were developed on a voluntary basis by Alfred Kirpal of TU Ilmenau, who had begun his working life as an apprentice at Funkwerk Kölleda.
The focus is on the history of the Funkwerk: from the Neutro-Werke, founded in 1945, which built lamps and simple radios from leftover aircraft material, through VEB Funkwerk Kölleda to the break-up of the company after 1990. Further rooms are devoted to calculating technology from the mechanical calculator to the computer, as well as writing, telephoning and listening to the radio, with typewriters, telephones, cameras and radio sets; the radio section ranges from the crystal receiver to the hi-fi system.
