About the museum

The foundation of the Kölleda local history museum was laid by the local historian Bruno Schwabe. He gathered mementos of the town and its surroundings, souvenirs of the district veterans' association, and natural history objects, which were first shown in a room of the town hall and in two rooms of the old school; parts of his collection and estate remain part of the holdings to this day.

Since 1994, the museum has been based in the former printer's house on Roßplatz. The building was erected in 1797 by the estate tenant Koch. From 1897, Theodor Böhme ran a print shop here and bought the house in 1904; until 1945, the "Cölledaer Anzeiger," the official gazette of the Eckartsberga district with its district seat Kölleda, was produced here. In 1977, Böhme's descendants gave the property to the town with the wish that a museum be set up there, and at the same time handed over a collection of cast-iron stove plates as well as the newspaper archive.

The exhibition centers on town history, with topics such as natural history, archaeological finds, jurisdiction, craft guilds, Kölleda as a garrison town, peppermint cultivation practiced since the early 19th century, club life, and newspaper printing. Behind the house lies a museum garden in the style of around 1800 with medicinal and culinary herbs, old vegetable varieties, and historic roses; the adjoining orchard meadow serves as an event venue.
