About the museum

The Galileo Wissenswelt in Burg auf Fehmarn is a privately founded museum run by Galileum Fehmarn GmbH, financed without public subsidies. It sees itself as a combination of a traditional collection museum and a children's and youth museum and is a member of the Bundesverband deutscher Kinder- und Jugendmuseen (German Association of Children's and Youth Museums). In 2016, after a year of advice from the Museumsverband Schleswig-Holstein/Hamburg, it received the "Certified Museum" seal. The concept was later adopted for a sister museum on Rügen.

The main building on Mummendorfer Weg contains two themed areas that can be visited individually or together. The TechnikWelt makes physical and technical phenomena tangible at experiment stations, for example with an earthquake simulator, a draisine or a hot-air balloon. Under the motto "From Dino to Human", the BioWelt leads chronologically through the history of the Earth.

In total there are more than 200 interactive exhibits. In summer, the "Übersee" museum, about two kilometres away, and a "dark experiment" are also included in the combination ticket. The museum donates part of its income to children's aid projects, most recently annually to UNICEF.
