Shown for the first time is the school chronicle of the former village school in Dazendorf, covering the period from the early 20th century to the 1960s, with village daily life and the consequences of both world wars.
About the museum
The museum goes back to the Stone Age collection of the farmer Carl Bütje, which was shown from 1955 as the Carl Bütje Museum in the attic of the town library. From this nucleus the present local history museum, run by the town, developed.
It opened in 1992 in the restored Art Nouveau villa of the former municipal savings and loan bank of 1902. In the meantime the building served as a district savings bank and later as a youth centre before becoming a museum.
The exhibition leads through the town's history, the harbour and seafaring, fishing including stone fishing, bathing life, as well as fossils and prehistory and early history. Ship models such as that of the five-masted barque "Preussen", a Chinese silk banner and a town model of 1785 are among the eye-catchers. A dedicated area commemorates Theodor Storm's novella "Hans und Heinz Kirch", which is set in Heiligenhafen, as well as the writers Wilhelm Jensen and Fritz Graßhoff. A support association backs the museum with special exhibitions and an events programme.
