About the museum
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the November pogroms, the Rhein-Sieg district decided in 1988 to document the history of the Jewish population along the Sieg. Hilde Seligmann made the house of her late father-in-law Max Seligmann on Rosbacher Bergstraße available to the district for this purpose. Moses Seligmann had bought the half-timbered house, about 200 years old, in 1919; until 1971 it served the family as both a home and the workplace of a second-hand goods business.
Of the family's children, only Max Seligmann survived the Shoah; his siblings were murdered together with their families. The memorial first opened in August 1994. From 2016 the house underwent thorough renovation for eight years; since August 2024 it has been open again with a newly designed permanent exhibition.
In ten rooms and the hallway of the two-storey house, the biographies of family members show how Jews lived in the countryside before 1933 and how they were persecuted, driven out and murdered. On display are photographs, books, ritual objects and furniture, mostly from family possession, as well as documents from the district archive; media stations, films and maps deepen the content. An events building next to the half-timbered house is used for lectures, concerts and work with school classes. The memorial is overseen academically and staffed by the district archive of the Rhein-Sieg district.
