MuseumsQuartier Tirschenreuth
Municipal museum in Tirschenreuth with a fishing museum and aquariums as well as departments on city history, porcelain, nativity scenes, icons, and Schmeller.
About the museum
The starting point of the MuseumsQuartier was the Oberpfälzer Fischereimuseum (Upper Palatinate fishing museum), which opened in 1993 and presents the almost thousand-year tradition of pond farming in the Stiftland. The town of Tirschenreuth then spent five years converting the former monastery in the town center into a museum ensemble, which opened in 2008.
The quarter includes the main building on Regensburger Straße, the renovated old building of the monastery, a restored monastery garden, and the Haus am Teich opposite, with a five-meter-long large aquarium. An underground passage connects the buildings and shows stages of the city's history.
In addition to fishing, with live native fish in several aquariums, departments are devoted to city history, Tirschenreuth porcelain, which was produced here between 1838 and 1994, the former Heimatkreis Plan-Weseritz in Bohemia, the regional nativity scene tradition, an icon collection, and the linguist Johann Andreas Schmeller, who was born in Tirschenreuth.
Since 2021, the Handwerkerscheune (craftsmen's barn) in Matzersreuth with the furnishings of a mechanical barrel factory has been an annex, as has the Schauwerkstatt Alte Wagnerei (demonstration workshop, old wheelwright's shop) next to the museum.
