Burgenmuseum Nideggen
Museum in the keep of Nideggen Castle on castles and life in the Middle Ages in the Eifel and Rhineland – with a dungeon, courtroom, and castle models.
About the museum
Nideggen Castle was built in the late 12th century as the seat of the Counts of Jülich; its oldest part is the keep (Bergfried) built between 1177 and 1190, a residential and defensive tower with walls up to two meters thick. In its heyday from the 13th to the early 16th century, the complex was the political and cultural center of the Duchy of Jülich and in 1347 received a huge two-story palace (Palas). In the 13th century, two Cologne archbishops were even held prisoner in the dungeon.
After destruction from 1542, later attacks, and an earthquake in 1878, the castle fell into ruin. From 1902 it was rebuilt and from 1922 used as a local history museum. Badly hit in the Second World War, it was restored again from the 1950s; in 1979 the Burgenmuseum opened in the keep. The castle and museum now belong to the district of Düren, which operates the museum.
The permanent exhibition shows how people lived and worked in castles and palaces of the Eifel and the Rhineland. On view are, among other things, models of regional castles, weapons and armor, a courtroom with information on medieval jurisdiction and torture, and the dungeon, where an effects show tells of the fate of the prisoners. A multimedia presentation lets visitors take part in everyday castle life and experience the destruction of the castle; temporary exhibitions complement the program.
