About the museum
The building on Bahnhofstraße was built in 1876 in the Neo-Renaissance style. The builders were the Gewerbeverein Spaichingen-Heuberg, founded in 1861, and the Handwerkerbank, who wanted to provide technical and commercial training here for tradespeople and young people in order to help the rural region keep pace with industrialisation. In 1918, the town bought the building and used it for schools and other public purposes.
At the end of the 1980s, the building, which was in need of renovation, became vacant. At the same time, the Spaichingen Heimatverein, founded in 1983, was looking for space for its collection, built up over many years. The town had the listed building restored and, together with a cultural studies scholar, set up a museum, which opened on 5 September 1991 as part of the 1200th anniversary celebrations. The museum is run by the town of Spaichingen.
The permanent exhibition ranges from the geology at the foot of the Dreifaltigkeitsberg and early settlement, through the Church and popular piety, to industrialisation after the railway connection in 1869. Separate rooms are devoted to woodworking and the furniture industry, the town's once nine breweries, the inns, the sculptor Karl Kuolt and the Stehle barber's salon, which operated until the 1990s. Special exhibitions and cultural events take place in the Festsaal.
