About the museum
The Fruchtkasten, a massive former Württemberg granary, was built in 1804/05. Since the 1930s it has housed the Tuttlingen local history museum, which includes departments on settlement history and archaeology, natural history, and urban and industrial history.
A special holding is the extensive collection of historical medical instruments, which recalls Tuttlingen's development into a center of medical technology. The industrial history begins with the Ludwigstal iron smelting works, founded in 1696, from which metalworking developed, first with knife smiths and later with the production of medical instruments.
A new installation focusing on industrial history is planned for the future. The building is currently closed to visitors for structural reasons; the permanent exhibition as it stood in 2022 can be seen on a virtual tour. The Hugo-Geißler-Saal regularly hosted temporary exhibitions on city history.
