About the museum
The Ginkgo Museum has existed since 1998 and is privately run by the Becker family, who have been trading in ginkgo products since 1992. It is located in Weimar's old town on Windischenstraße, directly on the market square.
The exhibition on the upper floor is devoted to ginkgo plants and especially Ginkgo biloba, often called a living fossil. It explains historical and mythical connections as well as the use of the plant in cooking, cosmetics and medicine.
The collection includes fossil leaves, wood and seeds from various geological ages. The oldest piece is a slate about 300 million years old from the Carboniferous; in addition there are leaf fossils 37 to 58 million years old from McAbee in Canada and, since 2012, pieces of petrified ginkgo wood about 15 million years old from the Ginkgo Petrified Forest in the northwestern USA.
