About the museum

The stately townhouse on the Esplanade, today's Schillerstraße, was built in 1777 for a merchant. Friedrich Schiller bought it in 1802, moved in with his family and had some alterations made. In the three years until his death in 1805, he wrote works here including “Die Braut von Messina” (The Bride of Messina) and “Wilhelm Tell”. His widow Charlotte lived in the house until 1826 and let out individual rooms; afterwards the children sold the property and parts of the furnishings.

In 1847, the city of Weimar bought the building and set up a memorial in the same year – the first memorial to a poet in Germany. Contemporary witnesses helped restore the mansard floor as faithfully as possible. Over time, the rooms were redesigned several times. Today the house belongs to the Klassik Stiftung Weimar and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Classical Weimar”.

Since 1988, the house has been connected to the new building of the Schiller-Museum, which serves as the entrance and hosts temporary exhibitions. The tour leads through the service and servants' rooms on the first floor, the rooms of Charlotte and the children on the second floor, and the poet's living quarters in the mansard. Original items from his estate are complemented there by period furniture; the desk and bed in the study are originals. Panels explain Schiller's life, his work and the history of the house.
