Weimar Haus
Private experience museum in Weimar that leads through the town's history with sets, life-size figures, light and sound.
About the museum
The Weimar Haus on Schillerstraße opened in 1999 and celebrated its 20th anniversary in June 2019. It is a privately run house that conveys Weimar's history not with classic display panels but as a staged journey through time. The project was initiated by Turpin Rosenthal. When his business concept did not work out as hoped, the employees took over operations themselves; for over ten years, Detlef Lange and Annette Veit from Weimar have run the house through Neue Geschichtserlebnis GmbH.
The tour leads through elaborately designed scene rooms with lifelike figures and light and sound effects. It begins in prehistoric times, when the first people settled in the marshy surrounding area, and extends through the Kingdom of Thuringia and medieval Weimar to Weimar Classicism with Anna Amalia's Round Table. Further stations are Napoleon's entry in 1806 and Goethe's Faust. The house explicitly sees itself as an introduction to a visit to Weimar, meant to whet the appetite for the city's other museums and sites.
According to its own information, over 800,000 people have already visited the Weimar Haus. The operators' offerings now also include a souvenir shop with an online shop, organized city tours for groups and school classes, and information portals for visitors to Weimar.
