About the museum

Großalmerode calls itself the "Stadt des guten Tones" ("City of Good Clay") and looks back on around 800 years of clay and glass production. The museum of the history association shows how the raw material clay was won from the nearby Hirschberg, prepared and processed. Over the centuries, the product range extended from household ceramics, clay pipes and marbles to large crucibles and highly specialized refractory bricks. Staged workplaces and two video terminals make the working worlds vivid.

A separate room is devoted to forest glass from the Kaufunger Wald, which was made here from the Middle Ages into the early modern period. The glassmakers' guild, the Hessischer Gläsnerbund (Hessian Glassmakers' Association), was founded in Großalmerode in 1537 and was based there.

Beyond the trades, the museum focuses on the people behind them: their economic and social situation as well as their consumption and leisure habits, especially from industrialization to the 1950s and 1960s. The Heinrich-Pforr-Galerie, dedicated to the life and work of the local painter, is also integrated into the building. In addition, there is a historical-technical educational and hiking trail past old industrial sites.
