Glockenmuseum Laucha
Original, preserved workshop of the Ulrich bell-founding family in Laucha, where bronze bells were cast by hand until 1911.
About the museum
After the town fire of 1731, the bell founder Johann Georg Ulrich came to Laucha from Hersfeld to recast the destroyed church bells. He stayed in the town and founded a foundry tradition that his sons continued; in 1790 they built a permanent workshop outside the Untertor gate.
Over several generations, several thousand bronze bells were produced here in a confined space for churches in the region and beyond. The last casting took place in 1911, after which the workshop remained largely unchanged.
Since 1932 the former foundry has been open to the public as a technical museum. Limestone walls, soot-blackened beams, the brick melting furnace, the casting pit with bell core, and the original tools give the impression that the founders have only just interrupted their work. The museum is now owned by the town of Laucha an der Unstrut.
