About the museum

In Klosterhäseler, the Heerwagen family of organ builders maintained their workshop from 1855 to 1892. The organ building museum recalls this chapter and has been housed since 2005 in the castle's crypt and adjoining rooms. The crypt dates from the early 14th century and is a remnant of the Cistercian convent that existed here from 1239/40 to 1540; after secularization it was incorporated into the castle.

The castle served until the land reform as the seat of the manor owners, later as a residence, school, municipal administration and LPG office. Today it houses apartments, association rooms and a winery.

The exhibition covers the Heerwagens and Thuringian organ building with display panels, models, tools and materials. An open slider chest organ with three stops makes the mechanics visible; some pieces come from the former Thüringer Orgelmuseum Bechstedtstraß. In the neighboring village church of 1766 stands an organ by Wilhelm Heerwagen from 1871 with 13 stops, which sounds during tours.
