Heimathaus Nebra
Local heritage house in Nebra with everyday objects from 1850 to 1950, craft tools, toys and a memorial room for Hedwig Courths-Mahler.
About the museum
The Heimathaus Nebra opened on May 1, 1999, after the town and committed citizens had long worked toward a museum for the town, first mentioned in 876. It is housed on the market square in a former shoemaker's house with a workshop, which its last owner bequeathed to the town and which was subsequently renovated.
On display are items that were part of everyday life in this small farming town between about 1850 and 1950 – in the house, farmyard and garden. Tools from various trades such as stonemasons, ropemakers, coopers, tailors, shoemakers and basket makers tell of the working lives of winegrowers, farmers and craftspeople. There are also a historic kitchen and laundry room, embroidered linens, and a collection of dollhouses and toys. One section of the exhibition is devoted to the Nebra Sky Disc, found nearby, and to the people of the Bronze Age.
The house is closely connected with the writer Hedwig Courths-Mahler, who was born in Nebra in 1867. The archive dedicated to her, with books, writings and pictures, was housed in the Heimathaus until 2025 and is now located on the Promenade; in the Heimathaus, a memorial room continues to commemorate the author. Both sites are run by a volunteer interest group.
