About the museum

The museum is housed in one of the Kavaliershäuser (courtiers' houses) belonging to the ensemble of Schloss Solitude, built from 1763 by Duke Carl Eugen. The von Graevenitz family lived here from around 1906. Born in Stuttgart in 1892, Fritz von Graevenitz worked from 1921 until his death in 1959 as a freelance sculptor and painter in the work yard next to the house and in two studios at Solitude; from 1938 to 1946 he also headed the Stuttgart Academy of Fine Arts.

After the studios were demolished in the late 1960s, his widow Jutta von Graevenitz set up a museum in the house at Solitude 24 in 1971 to show a selection of his works where they were created. The permanent exhibition offers a cross-section of his oeuvre: bronzes, mainly portraits, plaster models and photographs, as well as drawings, watercolors and etchings; casts of larger works stand in the garden.

Since 2002 the Stiftung Fritz von Graevenitz, founded by his heirs and administered by the Heidehof Stiftung, has looked after the estate, research and the museum, which is funded entirely privately. The foundation also presents a scholarly account of the artist's role during the Nazi era.
