About the museum
The listed building on Pfarrstraße, next to the town church, has an eventful history: it served, among other things, as a Beguine house and as a German school and Latin school. The composer Daniel Speer taught here from 1670 to 1672. The best-known pupil was the later astronomer Johannes Kepler, who attended the school in 1577–1579 and 1581–1583.
Over three floors, the museum shows the town's history from the New Stone Age to the recent past. Archaeological finds document more than 5,000 years of settlement history, and one room is devoted to the Nazi era and the concentration camp in Leonberg. The "Sacharchiv" (object archive) arranges the collection by theme and by stages of the town's history, telling the big and small stories of its citizens, up to the Leonberg Dog.
On December 27, 2021, just in time for Kepler's 450th birthday, the Kepler Room opened: an interactive, multimedia space modeled on outer space, devoted to Kepler's dream worlds, places of life and letters. Another room commemorates the philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling, born in Leonberg in 1775. It shows first editions, portraits, original letters and two early collected editions of his works.
