About the museum
The museum is located in the castle of the Counts of Moers, whose origin was a square residential tower around 1200. Around 1300 the castle was expanded into a ring-wall castle; in the 15th century a curtain wall and a palas (main residential hall) were added. Later, fortress construction, Spanish occupation and the rule of the House of Orange shaped the site. In the 19th century the castle was remodeled in the Biedermeier style, among other things by a manufacturer.
After renovation and extension, the museum reopened in 2013 with a new permanent exhibition. During the construction work, medieval defensive walls with arrow loops and a clay dome oven from around 1200 came to light; they are now accessible in an excavation area. A virtual guide, Countess Walburgis von Neuenahr-Moers, leads through the exhibition.
The collection is devoted to the history of the castle and the County of Moers, as well as the cultural and everyday history of the region. On display are Roman finds from Moers-Asberg, a Rococo room from 1785, a historical shop, traditional costumes and trousseau pieces from the 18th and 19th centuries, and a dollhouse collection. In the outdoor area, the Grafschafter Musenhof play and learning town invites children to medieval role-play.
