About the museum
The Haus des Bergmanns is a former double residence for two families in the Altsiedlung Friedrich Heinrich, built between 1907 and 1930, one of the largest miners' colonies in the Rhineland-Westphalian industrial region. It was set up as a museum in 2006; since 2007 it has been looked after by the Fördergemeinschaft für Bergmannstradition (mining tradition support association), made up of volunteer members.
For a long time only one half of the house showed the apartment of a miners' family from the 1920s and 1930s, with kitchen, parlor, bedrooms, outhouse and laundry room, while the other half was devoted to mine technology. After about a year of renovation, the house reopened in 2024 with a new permanent exhibition, for which the city of Kamp-Lintfort had the second half redesigned.
The new rooms tell the story of the colony through photographs, listening stations with eyewitness interviews and themed rooms on club life, Heimat (local identity) and life as a "Kolonist" (colonist). The Altsiedlung once housed people from some 40 countries and regions of origin. In summer, the Bergmannsgarten (miners' garden) is also tended, showing how vegetables and fruit were grown for home use.
