About the museum
The Lehrerhaus in Friemersheim was built around 1800 as the sexton's house of the nearby village church. About fifty years later it was extended by two classrooms, in which the village children were taught until 1958. When the heritage-protected house was to be demolished at the end of the 1970s, the Freundeskreis lebendige Grafschaft (Lively Grafschaft Friends' Circle), founded in 1976, campaigned for its preservation.
After the restoration, which began in 1979, the house opened on April 24, 1983. At first, a Grafschafter Heimatstube (local history room) and the hall and kitchen could be seen; today the museum also shows a bedchamber and a classroom with school furniture from the 1920s and 1930s. There, visitors can see how the village teacher lived with his family and what lessons with slate and stylus were like.
The association shares knowledge about the history, customs and dialect of the old County of Moers. The house also serves as a cultural and wedding venue; civil weddings have been held here since 1997.
