The museum was created by the Duisburg collectors Dirk Krämer and Klaus Maas, whose initials form its name. In 1998 they established the Stiftung DKM (DKM Foundation), and from 1999 to 2011 they ran Galerie DKM in the Garten der Erinnerung at the Innenhafen (inner harbor), a small exhibition space that could also be viewed from outside through large windows and hosted more than 70 exhibitions.
In January 2009, Museum DKM opened in a building on Güntherstraße in the Dellviertel district, not far from the main station, converted by Swiss architects. Some 50 rooms are spread across around 2,700 square meters, each devoted to individual artists or themes; some are complete room installations.
The collection combines contemporary art since the 1960s – with works by more than 300 artists, including Ulrich Rückriem and Ulrich Erben – with art from ancient Egypt, Gandhara, China, Japan, Cambodia and Thailand, as well as vessels and photography. Old and new are deliberately presented side by side. The foundation's wider circle includes other foundations, for example one dedicated to the work of Ulrich Rückriem and one to the archive of the sculptor Ernst Hermanns.
