About the museum
The museum's foundation is the specimen collection of the Duisburg town inspector Hermann Thelen, which from 1949 was shown to the public, first in an attic room and later in a barrack in the Duisburger Wald, under the name "Studio der Heimat". In 1973, the Rheinisches Museumsamt recognised the collection as a natural science museum.
After stops in Neudorf and, from 1980, in a school in Wedau, where at times the bee research later spun off as a separate bee museum was also shown, the museum had to give up its rooms in 2015. After several months in temporary storage, it moved into the Haus der NaturFreunde on Düsseldorfer Straße in Wanheimerort.
Today the permanent display shows minerals and rocks – some from mines on the Lower Rhine and in the Ruhr region –, fossils such as mammoth skulls and the skeleton of a sea cow about 30 million years old, a bird and insect collection on local fauna, and prehistoric and early historic finds. The house is looked after by the Duisburg local group of the NaturFreunde.
