Grieg-Begegnungsstätte
Memorial and meeting place dedicated to Edvard Grieg in the former C. F. Peters publishing house – with an exhibition, a historic music salon and concerts.
About the museum
The Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg came to Leipzig in 1858 at the age of fifteen to study at the conservatory, and he remained closely connected to the city for more than half a century. The music publisher C. F. Peters played a key role: its owner, Max Abraham, published Grieg's works, supported him and became a close confidant.
The publishing house at Talstraße 10 in the Seeburgviertel was built in 1873/74 to designs by architect Otto Brückwald and is now a listed monument. Its centerpiece is the piano nobile (Beletage) with the historic music salon. In 1998, the association Grieg-Begegnungsstätte Leipzig e. V. was founded; it opened the rooms as a museum and event venue on November 7, 2005. Memorial plaques and a sculpture in the garden commemorate Grieg and his publisher.
The permanent exhibition traces Grieg's life and work and his Leipzig connections through documents and autographs. The restored hall regularly hosts concerts, readings, lectures and events for children, and Norwegian language courses are also offered. The house is Stop 3 of the Leipzig Music Trail (Leipziger Notenspur), sees itself as a center of German-Norwegian cultural exchange and is one of the Leipzig music heritage sites that received the European Heritage Label in 2018.
