Landtechnik-Museum Braunschweig – Gut Steinhof
Association-run museum on the historic Gut Steinhof estate with working farm machinery, mostly from the first half of the 20th century.
About the museum
Until the Reformation, the Steinhof in northern Braunschweig belonged to the Kreuzkloster convent, after which it came under ducal authority. Most of today's farmstead dates from the 18th and 19th centuries: a manor house for the estate tenant in 1789, the drive-through barn in 1838, the cattle barn in 1863, and the granary in 1883. In 1893 the City of Braunschweig took over the estate and, from 1895, used it as a sewage farm for irrigating fields with municipal wastewater; housing for workers and day laborers was built for this purpose as well.
After farming ended in 1970, the Förderkreis Gut Steinhof was founded in 1984. The nonprofit association leased the buildings east of federal highway B 214 from the city and set up the Landtechnik-Museum (agricultural machinery museum) in them. In the years that followed, the volunteers used grant funding to restore the barn, the cattle barn ceiling, and the courtyard paving; in 1994 a Lanz steam traction engine from 1907 was added.
On some 1,400 square meters, the museum shows how draft animals were gradually replaced by steam engines and internal combustion engines. The equipment, mostly donated, is restored and kept in working order wherever possible; on event days such as potato planting, potato harvest, or the harvest festival, association members and a youth group demonstrate it in action.
