About the museum
The Haus der Badisch-Pfälzischen Fasnacht is housed in the Wormser Warte, a watchtower from 1451 that belonged to the defensive landwehr of the Imperial City of Speyer. After being hit by tank shells in 1945, it burned out and stood as a ruin for a long time until it was rebuilt from 1971 to 1973 with funds from the city and the state. Association president Georg Wilhelm Fleischmann had proposed setting up a carnival museum there.
The Vereinigung Badisch-Pfälzischer Karnevalvereine (Association of Baden-Palatinate Carnival Clubs) established the foundation "Haus der Badisch-Pfälzischen Fasnacht" in 1986, which runs the museum. In 1987 it acquired the house attached to the tower, which was renovated; a small seminar room was created in a former shed. The house serves as the association's meeting place, archive, and museum.
The collection includes charters, old photographs, songbooks, event programs, and Narrenpässe (fool's passports), along with parade programs from Speyer (1831), Kaiserslautern, Landau, and Mannheim. Highlights include the "Lehmannsche Chronika" from 1662, which documents a Fastnacht (carnival) in Speyer as early as 1296, and a Narrenhelm (fool's helmet) from 1841. The collection is complemented by carnival badges, fool's caps, historic guard uniforms, and costumes. The museum was recently redesigned and now also shows Hästräger of the Alemannic Fasnacht.
