About the museum
The Haus der Donauschwaben in Haar is the cultural center of the Danube Swabians in Bavaria. The Landsmannschaft der Donauschwaben, Landesverband Bayern (Bavarian state branch of the Danube Swabian regional association), gathered history, customs, costumes, dances, and music there over decades. In 1992 the Bezirk Oberbayern (Upper Bavaria district) took on the sponsorship of the ethnic group; on December 9, 1997, the house in Haar was handed over.
The exhibition traces the path of the Danube Swabians: their settlement in the Kingdom of Hungary in the 17th and 18th centuries, life together in a multilingual neighborhood, flight and expulsion at the end of World War II, and the new start in Bavaria. On display are everyday and working objects, customs, and a large collection of Danube Swabian costumes (Trachten), some original and some made after historical models.
The house also includes a library of more than 5,000 books and periodicals, a music archive, and archive holdings for genealogical research. The Kulturzentrum Haus der Donauschwaben e.V. (cultural center association) continues to develop the museum today.
