About the museum
The Haus der Fotografie in Burghausen was founded in 1983 and designated a specialized museum for photography in 1986. Since 1998 it has borne the name of its founder and long-time director, Dr. Robert Gerlich. It lies right at the entrance area of the castle complex and is one of the municipal institutions.
The collection spans more than 170 years of photographic history: a camera collection with more than 600 devices from all eras and fields of use stands alongside a presentation of early photographic processes and historical images of the town's history. The gallery for contemporary photography shows icons of photography from the museum's own holdings.
The house also holds the photo archive of the city of Burghausen, which documents the development of architecture, the economy, social life, politics, and culture since the beginnings of photography.
