About the museum
The Gerbereimuseum (tannery museum) shows the history of the tanning trade in Tittmoning. Since the end of the 16th century, five tanning lines (families) of the town have been documented in the archives. The basis of the collection is the extensive legacy of the Rotgerberei (red tannery) of the Wandinger family, which operated from 1878 to 1953.
The museum is housed in the former Marstall of the Troadkasten (granary) on Tittmoning Castle, a border fortress built in the 13th century by the Salzburg archbishops against Bavaria. Beneath the historic vaulting it is designed as an interactive, experimental house where visitors may try things out and touch exhibits. It was created as a cooperative project with the Museum Fronfeste in Neumarkt am Wallersee in Austria.
Information boards and listening stations make the collection understandable even without a guided tour; on request the tannery also offers guided tours. The house is part of the castle's museum offerings, which also include the Museum Rupertiwinkel with regional folk art, finds and the largest collection of Schützenscheiben (marksmanship panels) in Bavaria.
