About the museum
The Kirschenhof on Dürener Straße was originally a manor estate and passed in 1783 to the Wültgens-Englerth family of entrepreneurs. Around 1839, Maria Englerth had a stately residence built on its site. From 1909, the Eschweiler Bank converted the building into an imposing bank headquarters, and from 1927 to 1957 it served as the head office of the lignite company Braunkohlen-Industrie-AG Zukunft. Later a wholesale paper business and a hygiene institute used the building, which has been a listed monument since 1985.
In 2018, the town of Eschweiler bought the Kirschenhof and had it renovated. In 2024 it opened as the Haus der Geschichte und Kultur: besides the club rooms of the Eschweiler Geschichtsverein and a hall with a wedding room on the upper floor, it houses the museum of local history, which was first shown to the public on Open Monument Day in September 2024.
The museum was developed together with the firm ConCultura and funded by the state programme "Heimat-Zeugnis". The large exhibition room is divided into the themes Land and River, Town, Industrialisation and People; media stations deepen the content, including on the Eschweiler dialect. In the history workshop, interested visitors can do their own research at research workstations.
