About the museum

The Inden history association (Geschichtsverein) was founded in 1977 from an initiative in the municipal council to preserve historical objects in the municipal area. The first exhibition, on finds from the Stone Age and Roman times, drew over 1,600 visitors in 1979 and convinced the municipality to give the association its own exhibition rooms.

At first the association showed its items on the upper floor of the primary school in Lucherberg, which opened in 1980 with a photo exhibition. The basic collection included, among other things, the Roman collection of co-founder Gottfried Gehlen from the area of the Schlangengraben between Altdorf and Kirchberg; a cast of the Sunucer-Stein from Frenz was added.

In 1993 the museum moved into the old town hall of Lucherberg, where it today has seven rooms. The display is organized into the areas of Roman times, the Frankish period and the Middle Ages, as well as the Middle Ages in the municipality of Inden, and is supplemented by models, a newspaper and photo archive, and video films. Another theme is the nearby Inden lignite open-cast mine and the issue of resettlement.
