About the museum
The Haus der Natur in the Ahrensburg district of Wulfsdorf was built between 1906 and 1912 as the manor house of Hamburg building contractor Hermann Vering, together with a park in the style of an English landscape garden. In 1925/26 the city of Hamburg bought the estate, and the house then served as a youth home.
After the home closed in 1981, the Verein Jordsand, dedicated to protecting seabirds and nature, first took over the house and park as a tenant, and in June 1982 opened the Haus der Natur as an office and nature information center. In 1996 the buildings and park were placed under monument protection, and the park was recognized as a nature experience area. In 2005 the association acquired the property with the support of many donors.
Today the association coordinates its work from here across more than 20 protected areas. A permanent exhibition shows the association's nature conservation work, native birdlife, and various habitats; it includes aquariums and exhibits such as feathers and eggs. The park, with two ponds and old trees, is home to more than 60 bird species. The villa is considered in need of renovation, and the association is seeking supporters to help preserve it.
