About the museum

The building on Kerpen's Stiftsplatz was built between 1842 and 1844 as the town hall of the municipality of Kerpen and later served as the district court, which remained here until 1991. The city bought the house and had it thoroughly renovated over about 21 months; on June 1, 1996, it was handed over for its new purpose as the House for Art and History.

Since then, the city archive, the Heimatfreunde Stadt Kerpen association and a museum area have been housed here. The Kerpen-born artist Hermann Josef Baum gave the city 176 of his works; they are kept in the house and shown in changing selections.

On the upper floor, around 200 square meters are available for exhibitions on archaeology, local history, folk culture, cultural history or art. The Heimatfreunde also look after a local history collection and a library.
