About the museum
The museum was founded in 1985 at the initiative of the castle owner Joe F. Bodenstein, a Paris art dealer who worked for the sculptor Arno Breker. Initially opened as Museum Arno Breker Schloß Nörvenich, it now presents, under the name Museum Europäischer Kunst, a broader selection of 20th- and 21st-century art. It is run by a private association (Kunst-Museum e. V.) without state funding; the Europäische Kultur Stiftung supports themed exhibitions.
The museum is housed in Schloss Nörvenich in the district of Düren, a complex with medieval origins whose present building is about 300 years old. The Bodenstein family sees the house in the tradition of German-French understanding and celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Museum Europäischer Kunst in 2017.
The collection focuses on the life and work of Arno Breker, as well as on works by his artist friends Salvador Dalí and Ernst Fuchs. In addition, there are prints by artists such as Chagall, Miró, and Picasso, contemporary positions, and a portrait gallery with busts and reliefs of well-known personalities. Breker's role during the Nazi era is publicly contested.
