Haus Kupferhammer goes back to a brass hammer mill from 1659, which the copper merchant Johann Theodor Möller had converted into a copper hammer in the 1720s. The present building, with a central wing and two side wings, took its form in 1755. In 1849 Wilhelm Bergenthal took over the business and the residence and furnished it in a representative style; the inscription "Nichts ohne Mühe" (Nothing without effort) stands above the entrance. The estate also includes a pond system, outbuildings with an octagonal tower and a park.
Ottilie Bergenthal bequeathed the house to the town of Warstein in 1948, on condition that it accommodate a local history museum and the city archive. The museum opened in 1962. On the ground floor, the exhibits covered rural living, local casting and forging technology, geology and town history; on the upper floor, original furniture of the Bergenthal family was preserved – a complete example of upper-middle-class life in the 19th century.
In 2006 the Förderverein (friends' association) was founded, which now runs the house. Since 2010 the ground floor has been a meeting place with two to three exhibitions a year; concerts, lectures and demonstrations make the house a cultural center of the town.
