About the museum
The provostry on the Belecke Propsteiberg goes back to the Benedictine abbey of Grafschaft, founded in 1072 by Archbishop Anno II of Cologne. Around 1100 a branch monastery was established in Belecke, where up to seven monks lived and managed the monastery's extensive property in the northern Sauerland. The medieval town, founded in 1296, grew up around the provostry. With the secularization in 1804, the buildings passed to the parish of St. Pankratius.
The Baroque nave of the provostry church was built in 1749/50. In 1992 the provostry parish, together with the town of Warstein, set up the city museum in the former outbuildings. It connects the history of Belecke with the church and monastery history of the Sauerland and sets art-historical accents.
The tour begins with town history, featuring the town book, seals, guild chest and marksmen's silver. It leads to Archbishop Anno II and the Grafschaft monastery and shows Baroque figures of saints and the Virgin Mary. On the second floor, liturgical vestments are on view, including the fully preserved pontifical vestments of the Grafschaft abbots (Golden and Red Chapel). The actual treasury brings together chalices, ciboria and monstrances from the 15th to 18th centuries, among them the abbot's chalice of 1509.
