About the museum
The Heeseberg Museum is set up on a listed farmstead in Watenstedt, at the Heeseberg in the south of the Helmstedt district. It is run by the Förderkreis Heeseberg-Museum e.V. (support association). Across roughly 1,700 square meters, it displays equipment and documents from farming, crafts, household life and schooling.
The centerpiece is the house built in 1850, which holds historical documents, a permanent archaeological exhibition on the excavations at the Hünenburg, and geological finds from the Heeseberg. The Hünenburg exhibition was set up in summer 2013 by long-time excavation leader Dr. Heske of the University of Göttingen. Upstairs, the museum covers the church of Watenstedt with its old tower clock, village schools in the area, militaria, traditional costumes, and the processing of sugar beets and flax.
The large barn holds carriages, farm equipment, a 1935 Hanomag crawler tractor and a Lanz Bulldog with a hot-bulb engine. Other buildings show the tools of bakers, butchers, wheelwrights and carpenters, a general store fitted with 1950s stock, a laborer's house in the style of the 1930s, a shoemaker's workshop and a working forge.
