About the museum
The museum is housed in the Old Town Hall, which is number 1 on the market square next to St. Stephen's Church and is regarded as the town's second most important building. It was first mentioned in 1265, and the conversion from 1554 to 1560 still shapes it today. Until 1923 mayors and councillors met here; later the building housed, among other things, an employment office, a registry office, a building school, the economic office and a school kitchen.
The local history museum was founded in 1930 by Fritz Gille and Paul Eisert; since 1948 it has been open to visitors again. In the large council chamber it displays items on the seven guilds, the Ratstabula, a 15th-century wedding plate made of maple, family coats of arms and a shoemaker's workshop. The mayor's room shows, among other things, leather money and an armory.
