Volunteer-run local history museum in a Renaissance house on the market square, with town history, Stone Age finds, a shoemaker's workshop and an old schoolroom.
Special exhibition on artists and their works connected with Schöningen from more than a hundred years; announcement of the exhibition opening on 10 October 2026.
About the museum
The local history museum is on the market square in Schöningen, in a Renaissance building that Burchard von der Lippe had built around 1539. The façade shows the coats of arms of the Kurmark and the Duchy of Brunswick in red and yellow, and the portal bears a gilded crown. The house later belonged to Duchess Anna Sophie of Brunswick. The museum is run by the Heimatverein Schöningen e.V.; from the museum courtyard there is a view of St. Vincenz Church.
The exhibition spans from prehistory and early history, with Stone Age finds and paleontology, through town history to economic and civic life. On display are, among other things, a historic shoemaker's workshop and objects from house, yard and agriculture. An old schoolroom shows how lessons were taught a hundred years ago.
The museum also sees itself as a place of learning for children and young people: the “Junges Museum” (Young Museum) offers regular craft afternoons, holiday pass activities and programs for school classes, for example on school in the past or on the Stone Age.
