About the museum

The museum was jointly established in 1988 by the municipality of Kirkel and the Kirkel Local History and Tourism Association. It is located in the upper village of Kirkel-Neuhäusel, at the path leading up to the castle ruins, and is housed in a so-called stable house from the 18th century. In this type of smallholder house, typical of the region, the ground floor served as a stable while the family lived above – so the building itself is part of the exhibition.

Over three floors, the museum covers the history of the village and of Kirkel Castle, which was built around the year 1000, stood on the old long-distance road Via Regia, and has been archaeologically investigated since the 1990s following its destruction and decay. A small permanent exhibition room explains the structural development of the castle complex; display cases show finds from the castle and from the prehistory and early history of the surrounding area.

On the ground floor there is a fully furnished kitchen, and under the roof a bedroom from around 1900 with original pieces. The main room on the upper floor presents a new special exhibition every year, often featuring recent finds from the castle excavation or themes from everyday village life.
