About the museum
The Heimat- und Hafnermuseum in Heidenheim am Hahnenkamm is housed in a medieval tithe barn in the Klosterhof, between the town hall and the Münster. The town grew out of a Benedictine monastery founded around 1,250 years ago and has been a market municipality for more than 700 years.
The exhibition mixes small and large objects: it shows the living conditions of a poor region and village everyday life, along with the first fire pumps in the village, a forge, a wheelwright's workshop, a shoemaker's workshop, and household and farm tools. Ceramic stove craft (Hafnerkunst), practiced in Heidenheim for centuries, is represented by many old special pieces.
Impressive are the true-to-scale replicas of the Gothic-Romanesque Münster and the former Heidenheim synagogue in the neo-Moorish style. The museum is looked after by the market municipality and the Heimatverein (local heritage association).
