About the museum
The building is a half-timbered barn with a saddle roof, erected in 1753 by a corporal of the margrave's Leibregiment (guard regiment). It later served as a tannery until the town of Gunzenhausen acquired it in 1986 and renovated it thoroughly. Since 1989, the Weiperter Heimatstuben and the Erzgebirgsschau have been housed here.
The background is the sponsorship that Gunzenhausen took on in 1954 for the residents of the former mining and industrial town of Weipert (Vejprty) in the Erzgebirge, who were expelled after the Second World War. Across three floors, landscape models, photos, bobbin lace and passementerie, as well as examples of Erzgebirge folk art such as wood carvings, nutcrackers and Christmas pyramids, recall life in the former home.
The best-known pieces are the hand-carved scenes made by a wood carver from 1926 onward: a large Christmas nativity, the so-called Endlerkrippe, and moving pictures of winter fun, the mine, the Hutzenstube (traditional parlor) and the world of fairy tales. Most of the figures start moving after a 20-cent coin is inserted, which also makes this small exhibition vivid for children.
