About the museum
Cronheim in the Altmühl valley was for about 300 years a village where Protestant and Catholic Christians and a Jewish community lived side by side. Which denomination set the tone in the village depended over time on the ruler of the palace, and the Jewish residents had to adapt to this. This coexistence ended in 1938.
The museum is housed in Cronheim Palace, which today houses a therapy center run by the Arbeiterwohlfahrt (AWO welfare organization) for people with addictions. The exhibition shows the eventful history of the village and palace, and commemorates the Jewish families who were driven out of Cronheim between 1933 and 1938. On display are, among other things, traditional costumes of both Christian denominations, Judaica, a 19th-century farmhouse parlor with painted furniture, 17th-century Bibles, and everyday objects. Models of Bavarian synagogues are built in the model-making workshop of the therapy center.
