About the museum
The Binder-Pehr House on Pfarrstraße is one of the oldest buildings in Rottenburg. The purely timber-frame building dates from the 17th century and was rebuilt after the fire disaster of 1669. It takes its name from the cooper and barrel-making Pehr family, who lived on the property for several generations and ran a workshop and farm there. Josef Pehr stood at the workbench until the age of 85 and was the last resident of the house.
In 1996 the town of Rottenburg acquired the property, which was worth preserving. From 1997 a support association (Förderverein) accompanied plans to convert it into a local history and crafts museum; in 2002 the town transferred the house to the association on condition that it prepare a restoration and use concept and use the building as a museum for its designated purpose in the future. After about two years of renovation, the museum officially opened on July 1, 2007.
The centerpiece is the fully equipped cooper's workshop, with tools, machines and auxiliary equipment from earlier days. According to the museum, a cooper's workshop is shown here for the first time in Bavaria in the actual workshop room at its original site. The house is also used for exhibitions, events and as a meeting place.
