About the museum
The Goldbach MUSEUM is one of the youngest museums in the district of Landshut. It opened on March 21, 2025 in the Stiegler-Hof, a stately residence that the brewery owner Lambert Pritscher had built in 1912/13 on the slope above the Goldbach valley. At the time the estate included stables, a barn and around 62 hectares of land. From 1941 the brewer Ludwig Stiegler ran the property, and after the Second World War refugees also found shelter there. In 1983 the market town acquired the house and used it for apartments and the municipal yard; in 2021 the municipal council decided to convert it into a museum, a project that ran from 2022 to 2025.
The foundation of the collection was laid by Helmut Siegl, who from 1975, as a volunteer local heritage and archive curator, built up an extensive municipal archive; for a long time the holdings were stored in the cellar of the town hall. Many families, clubs and institutions later contributed objects from attics, cellars and estates. Today around 150 pieces are on display, about 2,000 more are in storage, and there are more than 2,700 digitized documents and photographs.
The exhibition in four rooms follows the question of what sustains a community: it spans archaeological finds and the Bavarians (Bajuwaren), clubs, festivals and the Nazi era, up to crafts, the industry that arrived with the railway, and the religious communities in the town. Life stories such as that of Kathi Littich, Germany’s first female master butcher, or of three people from Ergoldsbach who rescued prisoners of a death march in 1945, stand for courage and civic bravery. The museum is run by the market town of Ergoldsbach; the Goldbach Museum e. V. looks after tours, collection and programme on a voluntary basis. In 2025 the museum received the Bavarian Museum Prize in the category for volunteer-run museums.
