About the museum
The museum is housed in a listed building on Weinbergstraße that is among the oldest in the area. Wood analysis dates beams of the house and barn to 1547–1550; the unusually large brick vaulted cellar also dates from this period. In the 18th century the house was substantially remodeled, so its original appearance was reconstructed on the computer.
The Marktgemeinde (market municipality) of Altdorf acquired the building in 1989 and, after a heritage-compliant renovation, set up a museum that opened in 1996. The project was driven mainly by the commitment of residents and the Heimat- und Museumsverein (local heritage and museum association). Since then, changing special exhibitions and social events have shaped the house.
The focus is the permanent archaeological exhibition in the cellar, opened in 2016. Using finds from Altdorf, it traces a path from the first farmers some 7,500 years ago through the metal ages and the Romans into the early Middle Ages. The presentation on about 50 square meters is currently being redesigned.
