About the museum

The Heimathaus on Hohe Straße is a former residential and stable building made of field-fired bricks. Its exact age is unknown; a weather vane suggests a construction date around 1690, which would make it probably the oldest house in the village. It has always belonged to the neighboring Humberghaus.

From 1982, the Heimatverein Dingden, with the help of many citizens, converted the stable building into a small museum. After five years of construction, it opened in 1987. In the former stable room stands a replica of an open fireplace, recalling the hearth fires of the 17th century; the pebbles in front of it come from the former Marienvrede monastery.

The rooms show how a Westphalian family lived: a parlor in the brick-built Upkamer above the barrel-vaulted cellar, above it a living room with a sofa, costume dolls, and a loom, and a bedroom from 1880. Under the roof lie archaeological finds from Dingden, such as horn cores of a steppe bison and a replica of a Merovingian-period jug, along with household and farm tools, objects from World War II, a clog maker's workshop, and a shoemaker's corner. Twice a year, the association also shows exhibitions by amateur artists and genealogy displays.
