About the museum
Pastor Diedrich Spliethofen had the half-timbered house built in 1700 for his sister Angela. Later it belonged to other families, including Bernhard Splithof from 1849 onward. In the 1970s, during the renewal of the old town center, the state development company acquired it; in the 1980s it passed to the municipality of Ense, which had it renovated with considerable state funding. In 1981 it received a heritage plaque, and in April 1982 it was dedicated as a municipal community center.
In 1986, the Heimatverein moved into the upper floor under a usage agreement with the municipality; since then, the house has been the "Heimathaus." The ground floor houses the municipality's wedding room and a meeting room.
The Heimathaus serves as an archive and small museum. The room "Historisches Ense" includes models of the Bremen town center around 1950, of the old Josef hospital, of the Waterlappe water castle, and of the Oldenburg in Fürstenberg. In recent years, the building has been renovated with funding from the program "Heimat-Zeugnis": the roof structure was reinforced, the attic now holds a work room for the association's archive with some 55,000 documents, and a new staircase provides step-free access to the ground floor. The house is also a venue for lectures and association events.
