About the museum

The Heimatmuseum Niederense was founded on September 23, 1971 by the local heritage association, the Verein für Geschichte und Heimatpflege Niederense-Himmelpforten. One motivation was the wish to preserve evidence of local history, much of which had been lost in the flood disaster after the bombing of the Möhne Dam in 1943.

The museum is located in the former school building "Zum Westenbruch" next to the Bernhardusschule and spans three floors. The collection now comprises more than 1,000 objects: farm implements, looms, furniture and household goods, tools of old crafts such as a shoemaker's workshop, and the furnishings of a historic veterinary practice. Models show the former village of Niederense and Himmelpforten Monastery, founded in 1246.

A separate section is devoted to the Möhne disaster of 1943, with recovered finds including remains of a Lancaster bomber, historic film footage and eyewitness accounts.

Because the exhibition had recently become very cramped, the museum was given additional rooms on the ground floor of the building. The building is currently being remodeled so that the collection can in future be presented in a clearer, more logical sequence.
