St. Simon und Judas
Former parish church in Groß Reken with a Romanesque tower and largely preserved Baroque furnishings, a sacred art museum since 1969.
About the museum
The Old Church of St. Simon and Jude in the Groß Reken district grew over several building phases: the oldest parts of the Romanesque west tower date from around 1200, and the upper story was added around 1300. In the 15th century the Gothic nave was built, and the north aisle is dated to 1529. The result was a two-aisled hall church, rare in the Münsterland.
What is special is that the church has been hardly altered for centuries. The high altar (1656), a side altar from the 17th century, the carved pulpit from around 1700, late Gothic choir stalls, and the Romanesque baptismal font, reworked in the Baroque period, still stand in their original places.
After the construction of the new parish church of St. Heinrich, the Old Church lost its role as the main church. In 1969 a sacred art museum was set up in the north aisle and gallery, which grew out of an initially temporary exhibition. It shows liturgical implements, books, vestments, and sculptures from various eras. Services are still occasionally held in the church.
